16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum.
By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.
19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, [a] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.
20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat,
and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
(JOHN 6:16-21)
Storms, they come our way, every night and every day. Waves, they come crashing like a raging wind. But through it all, God is in control, whispering the same three words “Don’t be afraid” when no one else will.
Time and time again, we are called to cross stormy lakes in the deep of the dark. We are crippled by fear. We feel alone as if God is not there. We do not seem to get very far, possibly in danger that not only physically injures us, but the spiraling in the waves draws wounds and deep hurt that destroy our minds, choices and emotions.
Then God approaches, we are surprised, as if not knowing who He is, doubting that He would come and save us. The truth is He desires to be with us in the storms, keeping to His promise to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He desires to save us, not watch us suffer in silence as we deceive ourselves into believing through our experiences that no one cares, and we are not valued. The world paints pictures that cause our living hearts to turn dead.
This juncture calls for a check in on how much we truly know Him or desire Him, how willing our hearts are to welcome Him aboard to trust Him, obey Him and praise generously when we are proven victorious. We have witnessed His miracles time and time again, and agree that many times he would show us His power again right before our very eyes during tough seasons. He can “walk on water” and come to us and once we embrace Him, He takes us to where we need to be. We simply need to make room for Him, and He will take us there.
Are there emotional, spiritual and physical challenges we may be facing that He cannot handle? No! None at all! Stormy seasons in our lives are necessary, not only to challenge us to change but to teach us once again what His mercy and Grace feels like, looks like and sounds like. As we run into His deep waters in desperation, we will be saved and safe, it is a promise. As we are about to drown, we encounter Him face to face and experience a love that will pull us out to and lead us quickly to the opposite shores, where good news continues to be shared and testimonies begin to transform lives as one who is rescued and saved will declare truth that sets us free, all because of LOVE ~ Amy
